Trying to figure out which hay will work best for your little guy or gal? Alfalfa hay is rich in nutrients and is THE GO TO for young growing animals and older animals who need a nutrition boost. It’s also helpful for folks who have allergies to Timothy hay.

Alfalfa hay offers the same long-strand high fiber that Timothy hay offers, but with higher levels of energy, protein, and calcium. This hay features small clover-like leaves, branching stems, and small flower clusters.

Alfalfa hay has twice as much protein as 1st cutting Timothy hay (A little less difference when comparing 2nd cutting). The difference here is much more significant. But Alfalfa hay is the go-to hay for young rabbits. The little guys need protein!

Alfalfa hay can be a mix of colours, ranging from green to yellow; this is normal. So don't fret if it's not exactly the same each time you order. It's a natural product... it won't be the same each time you receive it.

If you’re wanting more details on how alfalfa hay compares to other types of hay, we’re here to help. We explain many of the different types of hay here, but to summarize, the most common types are Timothy hay (1st, 2nd, and 3rd cutting), alfalfa hay, orchard hay, and oat hay. Different types of hay have different characteristics, so it’s important to understand the profiles of each to meet your pet’s needs.

Small Pet Select knows hay. Inside and out. We have close relationships with many hay farmers in Washington State, and with more than 30 years of connections, you’re getting the best of the best. We personally choose the hay we like. We go to the fields, see the hay and smell the fresh crop. We hand pack each and every box that’s shipped to our customers. Our eyes are on everything… from the field to your door. We work hard to keep you as happy with us as your animal is with our products. Happy animals = happy parents. And we love that.

Jacob J. ★★★★★

My senior rabbit has been losing weight and the vet suggested a nutrient boost—this alfalfa hay is noticeably richer than the grass mixes I've tried, and he's been eating it more eagerly. It's become a staple for him to help keep his strength up.

Sophia ★★★★★

My picky little guinea pig actually finished her whole bowl of this alfalfa hay—it's so rich and green. She's been gaining back some energy, which is exactly what she needed as a growing pup.

Sophia W. ★★★★★

My senior bunny had been losing weight and turning his nose up at his old hay, but he dove straight into this alfalfa the second I put it down. The higher nutrient content is exactly what my vet said he needed at his age, and he's already filling out again after a couple weeks.
